Romania's Minister of Energy: Doubling Electricity Generation by 2032 to Become a Regional Energy Exporter

Romania's Minister of Energy announced that the country aims to double its electricity generation by 2032 and establish itself as a major regional energy exporter. To achieve this goal, Romania must implement a smart energy transition, making full use of its diverse domestic energy resources to maximize production efficiency.

Multi-Energy Structure and Energy Storage Development

Romania's energy mix includes fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal), nuclear power, hydropower, wind power, solar energy, biomass energy, and energy storage technologies.

Currently, the installed capacity of energy storage has surpassed that of biomass energy and is expected to exceed 1,000 MWh this year. Additionally, energy storage projects have secured funding from multiple investment funds.

National Energy Structure Adjustments

At present, coal-fired power remains the second-largest electricity source after natural gas. Over the next few years, Romania will gradually replace coal-fired power generation with gas-fired power plants. In the long term, natural gas power will be phased out in favor of nuclear energy to achieve a cleaner and more efficient energy supply.

Renewable Energy and Power Investment Plan

To reach its target of doubling electricity generation, Romania has launched its most significant strategic energy investment plan in nearly 35 years, which includes:

10,000 MW of new wind and photovoltaic projects;

3,500 MW of gas-fired power generation projects;

2,200 MW of nuclear power projects;

500 MW of hydropower plants under construction (including unfinished projects);

1,000 MW of pumped-storage hydropower construction;

1,000 MW of battery energy storage projects;

Other related energy infrastructure projects.
